PM may resolve spectrum row at India Telecom

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may try to resolve spectrum row at India Telecom 2007, which starts here on Wednesday.

He will also inaugurate the exhibition and release the India Telecom report for 2007, prepared by PriceWaterCoopers, at the exhibition-cum-conference, which will focus on the theme – From Digital Divide to Digital Opportunities.

Some members of parliament had written to the prime minister for his intervention in the issue. Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices had also written to the PM for resolving the spectrum allocation, after the GSM-led COAI had approached the TDSAT in the matter.

The forum assumes added significance as most of the telecom leaders will be present in a single platform, and will be appropriate for the prime minister to clarify the government’s stand.

He is also likely to announce the final deadline of 3G roll-out and other services, including the implementation ICT hardware manufacturing policy, and NeGP roll-out.

India Telecom 2007 will also mark the strategic private-public-partnership initiative with industry-academia collaboration on telecom centers of excellence (TCoE’s). One will be at Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, while the others will be in IITs.

This October, the government had announced setting-up of the first two TCoE’s are at IIM-Ahmedabad in association with Idea Cellular Ltd on ‘Telecom Policy, Governance, Regulation and Management especially marketing and Customer Care’ and by IIT-Kharagpur in association with Vodafone Essar on ‘Next Generation Telecom Networks and Network Technology’.

The objective of the India Telecom 2007 exhibition-cum-conference is to discuss new growth drivers that are revolutionizing the telecom sector in India and around the world and assess challenges and opportunities associated with new technologies and growth frontiers.

It would also focus on showcasing the huge potential that India holds in the telecom sector for inviting investments in telecom equipment manufacturing. The conference will bring together a galaxy of national and international visionaries, operators, equipment manufacturers and experts representing top institutions, cutting edge technology companies and major investors along with existing and upcoming communications infrastructure companies for interaction with the high-level policy makers.

India Telecom 2007 is a premier telecom event organized by the Department of Telecommunications along with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Telecom Manufacturers Association (TEMA), and Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI).
