PlayStation 5 to launch in India on February 2; pre-orders to begin on January 12

The Sony PlayStation 5 will officially be launched in India on February 2, 2021. Pre-orders for the gaming console will begin from 12 PM IST, January 12, 2021. You will be able to pre-order the console from Amazon, Flipkart, Croma, Reliance Digital, Games The Shop, Shop at Sony Center, Vijay Sales, and select other authorized retail partners. You can also only order until the stock lasts, as Sony mentions explicitly in its announcement here.

According to a report by Gematsu, the sale of 3.4 million units of the PlayStation 5 in the first four weeks makes it the highest selling PlayStation console ever. The console launched in several regions on November 12 including US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand. Further, more and the demand has been high ever since Sony opened pre-orders. For regions where it went on sale like North America and Europe, it was quite hard for people to place an order for the console as Sony wasn't able to restock the shelves (both virtual and physical) to meet the demand and the console was out of stock more often than not.

The PlayStation 5 will cost INR 49,990 ($685), while the digital edition of the console will sell at INR 39,990 ($550). Competitor Xbox Series X also costs $685 in India while Xbox Series S sells at $480. Like Sony, Microsoft has also been struggling to meet the demand for the new Xbox consoles in the world as well as in India.

In November, Sony suggested that it had delayed the launch of the PS5 in India due to local import regulations. Game news site The Mako Reactor reported earlier this week that Sony is unlikely to offer warranty and after-sales support for PlayStation 5 accessories in India — as has been the case for several previous generations.
