MUMBAI, INDIA: In recent years, the acceptance of virtualization and cloud computing among Indian enterprises has grown faster than ever.

On this key journey to virtualization and cloud, most CIOs are looking for IT infrastructure and systems that are not only cost effective but also open, interoperable and scalable in nature.

Interestingly for Red Hat, this trend among Indian enterprises and CIOs is driving demands for its open source solutions.

"India has a high presence of Unix based servers and infrastructure among enterprises and they are now migrating to Linux platform," says Arun Kumar, general manager, Red Hat India

"Move toward cloud is inevitable for enterprises. However, getting rid of the proprietary infrastructure is the first step towards cloud and virtualization," he adds.

According to Kumar, Red Hat's open hybrid cloud solutions fits very well to meet the core needs of CIOs that include commodity architecture, interoperability, on-demand or opex model and scalability.

"Our model has always been opex - subscription-based rather than the licence. We have a global strategy, but execute locally," points Kumar.

In terms of demand for Red Hat solutions in India, Kumar informs that financial services, government and telecom are key verticals with huge opportunities and it also represents same demands in other markets globally.

"India offers opportunities in both migration as well as green field projects. According to market estimates, Linux' addressable market is roughly around 25-30 per cent of the total server base in India," Kumar suggests.

Kumar, who also heads Red Hat's alliance programme in Asia Pacific region, points that Japan and Australia have been early movers from Unix to Linux, followed by India and ASEAN, while China and Korea are expected to follow the suit.

Red Hat provides open source solutions largely through partners and system integrators, which counts for 60 per cent of company's indirect sales and early this year it crossed the 1-billion revenue milestone. APAC region contributes around 18-20 per cent to company's overall business.
