Philips Research opens India center

BANGALORE: Philips Research, part of Royal Philips Electronics NV, has

announced the opening of a research center in India. Philips Research (India),

headed by Dr. Pradeep Desai, a research professional with wide experience, will

initially focus on embedded platforms and software technology. Within two years,

it aims to grow to 40 researchers, and be part of Philips Research’s global

organization.

Philips Research has previously interacted with Indian scientific

institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Philips

Research (India) will operate as the sixth division of Philips Software Center (PSC).

Philips Software India CEO Dr. Bob Hoekstra said, "I am elated with this

development and honored that Philips Software Center will contribute to the

success of, as well as benefit from the new Philips Research Center."

Philips has five labs and three centers worldwide, including the Bangalore

center. Their research programs will cover materials and processing, display

systems, lighting systems, storage systems, IC processing and designing,

embedded platforms, networked information, healthcare and imaging. Since 1997,

Philips has been supporting a large number of M. Tech programs at IIT Delhi. In

India, Philips is investing about Rs 50 million and hopes to reach a level of

about 40 researchers in two years.
