Philips India re-christened Philips Electronics India

PUNE: Philips India will be known as Philips Electronics India Ltd. from August 15 onwards this year, the company announced at a press conference.

The company said that it is investing $60 million in a new campus at Habbal in Bangalore.

Dr Bob Hoekstra, chief executive officer, Philips Software center Private Limited said around one-lakh sq feet would be constructed this year.

"The Medical Systems division will move in here soon, he said. Over 4 lakh sq feet will be constructed next year when the remaining divisions will move in. The campus would have a capacity for 4000 people," Hoekstra said.

The company already has a research and development centre at Bangalore called the Philips Innovation campus with over 1700 people and a shared services center at Chennai. It said the Innovation campus would eventually move out to a new location.

K Ramachandran, vice chairman and managing director, CEO India said the company would focus on a `consumer, health and wellness' as a major business from next year.

"Globally decided products do not apply to emerging markets such as India and therefore we have decided to use technology to serve the needs of the rural populace. Therefore, the focus is products such as a radio that broadcasts TV channels or smokeless cooking. A product creation group is in the offing to explore new categories of products," he said.

The company has merged different businesses retaining focus on the three interlocking domains of healthcare, lifestyle and technology.
