With fierce competition in the wireless space, operators are coming up with innovative technology to offer a fat bouquet of value added services. Not to be left behind, the PSU has already made a soft launch of its mobile TV services in a couple of circles in three zones, said Kuldeep Goyal, CMD BSNL. Aplaya Technologies is the content provider for this service,” Goyal said.

Hyderabad-based Apalya is a provider of mobile TV solution. The company has introduced the mobile TV and video-on-demand (VoD) based on the progressive play technology.

A senior official from BSNL informed that the company is in talks with handset manufacturers to come up with handsets supporting mobile video platform. “Currently this service is being supported on Nokia handsets only. We are in talks with some of the major handset manufacturers for launching handsets enabled with mobile video platform,” the official said.

However, he denied revealing the name of the handset manufacturers the PSU is in talks with. Sources said the company is in talks with Motorola and Sony Ericsson.

The PSU is currently offering 12 channels on the mobile platform. The official said that they are planning to increase the number close to 40 channels. “We are working on the pricing model for this service. Now it is being offered free trial for 30 days for CellOne customers,” the official said. This service is based on IP video steaming for the CellOne customers.

A number of operators have started offering mobile TV services in the country on the 2.5G networks. With the falling ARPUs the operators are betting high on the allocation of 3G spectrum by the government, which will allow faster and real-time streaming of mobile TV services and other value added services.
