Oracle powers 9 e-Gov projects

BANGALORE: Oracle India Private Limited started working, along with its partners, on nine, new e-Government projects in India, during the year 2003.



Oracle India’s partners, Tata Consultancy Services, National Informatics Centre, CMC Limited and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, among others, are using Oracle technology to power IT projects for the Department of Family & Child Welfare, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project, Kandla Port Trust, Mumbai Port Trust, Ahmedabad Muncipal Corporation, Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board, East Central Railway, Department of Commercial Taxes, Government of Assam and Department of Sales Taxes, and Government of Punjab.



Oracle India is now involved in e-Government projects in all 28 states in India. These projects are broadly in the areas of streamlining revenue generation, citizen service delivery and work flow management in Government departments.



"We are drawing from our best global experiences, having been involved in over 2000 e-Government projects around the world, to support the e-Government initiatives in India," said Mr Shekhar Dasgupta, managing director, Oracle India.



Some of the successful e-Government projects in India, which are running on Oracle technology are:



- eSeva, Government of Andhra Pradesh, which provides new government-to-consumer services at a rate of over one million transactions per month.



"Oracle provides us with a scaleable and robust backend for our application that handles over 1,000,000 transactions per month," says Mr. Phani Kumar I.A.S, Director eSeva, Andhra Pradesh Government.



- eCops, Government of Andhra Pradesh, which leverages Oracle Database technology to check crimes and network police stations online for more effective law and order management.



- Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, which handles more than 75,000 bookings in a month, in 74 cities, in the first phase.



"We have successfully scaled up to more than 75,000 bookings in a month, in 74 cities, in the first phase, " said Mr. Amitabh Pandey, Group General Manager (IT Services), Indian Railway Catering Services and Tourism Corporation.



- Maharashtra State Electricity Board, Government of Maharashtra which uses Oracle technology with their energy audits, high tension user billings and internal MIS.



- Directorate of Commercial Taxes, Government of West Bengal that has about 12,500,000 records of approximately 1,000 GB size on the Oracle platform.



- Education & Research Network (ERNET), which interconnects more than 200 Universities and 500 Engineering Colleges.



Oracle recently launched the Oracle-HP e-Governance Center of Excellence in India. The center will provide a platform for the development of model e-Governance applications, showcasing e-Governance applications that are currently being used by various Government agencies in India as well as e-Governance applications by Oracle, HP and their partners. It showcases Oracle’s successful e-Governance architecture, implemented worldwide by more than 2000 organizations, with particular emphasis on security, operations continuity, availability, scalability and lowering total cost of ownership.



The Oracle- HP e-Governance Centre of Excellence offers services such as technical consultation, proof of concept and thematic presentations, and is designed to create awareness amongst decision makers at the central and state-government levels to help effectively define and implement the e-Governance process.
