Olive Telecom announces 2010 business plan

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Olive Telecommunication today launched 3G embedded netbooks and 7 models of mobile phones under the new brand umbrella of Olive Convergence and announced to invest Rs 100 crore for setting up full-fledged design centre in India.

“Olive Convergence is an idea that is powered by an aspiration of providing our customers with products that are not only on the threshold of new technology innovations but also aim at creating new benchmarks in affordability of mobile computing and communication products,” said Arun Khanna, chairman, Olive Telecommunication.

He said in the first quarter of 2010 the company has plans to invest Rs 100 crore to set up a full-fledge design centre in India.

Olive has named it 3G-embedded netbooks as Zipbook which it will provide for BSNL customers. Earlier, in September, it had launched EVDO-based netbook in tie-up with Tata Teleservices. These netbooks have in-built modems to connect to 3G and EVDO-service.

The company is currently running trial with Reliance Communication to bring EVDO based netbook for its customers. In 2010, Olive has a target to sell 100 thousand netbooks in India.

In the mobile phones segment, Olive launched seven models of mobile phones with the range starting at Rs 999 and a qwerty key pad phone at Rs 2299. In 2010, Olive will launch mobile phone that will work on AAA batteries as well.

“We will launch two-to-three models. We have plans to launch mobile phone that can be charged and operated using AAA battery. Across the globe we have target to sell 10 million handsets and 30 per cent of which will be sold in India,” said Khanna.

Khanna added that there are around 15 new models of phone that will be launched in the first quarter of 2010. The company is present in 24 countries worldwide and has plans to enter into Russia and Indonesia in the coming year. Olive is also in process to launch mobile phone on Android platform in January 2010.

“The phone is ready for launch. We are waiting for Google mobile suite. The agreement between Olive and Google should be in place in the next three to four weeks,” said Khanna.

Though Khanna did not elaborate on the price of phone, it is estimated to be launched in the price range of Rs 15000.

Olive Telecommunication has plan to get listed in other three years time.

“If everything goes well, we will have IPO in other three years time,” said Khanna.
