CIOL- Government reportedly considering using private cars as shared taxi

The government of India has had very rough time dealing with cab aggregators in the country so far. Be it Ola or Uber, the two have always found themselves on the other side of fence against the government. But looks like we may soon see a uniform ground with notified guidelines for all the aggregators.

According to an Economic Times report, the government is planning to instruct both Ola and Uber to have their fare calculation software validated from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Speaking to the publication, a senior government official said, “The fare calculation mechanism for all modes of public transport is authorized by the government. We need to do the same for taxi aggregators so that their system becomes credible and there are no doubts on the credibility of the software they use for calculating fares, taking into account the distance traveled and time taken.”

Apparently, separate mechanical fare meters were also being considered by the government but validation of the fare calculation software looks more feasible now because the decision to include a separate meter in cabs lies in the hands of the states.

The guidelines are also expected to instruct cab aggregators to include state-approved traditional black and yellow taxis on their platform. This move is certainly aimed at providing equal opportunities to these cab drivers, whose business has been affected due to the ease of traveling via online cab booking platforms.
