NEW DELHI, INDIA: Juniper Networks, Inc, provider of high-performance networking, has announced that Japan’s NTT Communications (NTT Com) has deployed Juniper Networks T1600 core routers to scale the capacity of its global IP network,  the largest dedicated Internet backbone network in the world.

Traffic growth driven by increased subscriber demand for IPTV and multiplay services compelled NTT Com to scale the capacity of its global Tier-1 IP backbone network. Key considerations for the selection included the non-disruptive upgrade path from the T640 to the multi-terabit capacity and energy efficiency advantages of the T1600.

“To support rapid increase of Internet traffic and services, we upgraded our backbone network with T1600s to expand routing capacity, while also minimizing operation cost, space and power consumption,” said Kempei Fukuda, director, global network department, NTT Com.

“With the T1600, we doubled the network capacity on the same footprint, and more importantly, reduced power consumption by more than 20 percent.  The T1600 is an optimal solution for improving network performance, creating more value for our customers, as well as meeting our commitment to protect the environment.”

NTT Com began its global IP network service in July 1997 with 45Mbps bandwidth between Japan and U.S. In 2000, NTT Com acquired a Tier-1 Internet service provider, Verio, and expanded the bandwidth between Japan and the U.S. to over 1 Gbps.

NTT Com has been continuously upgrading its global Tier 1 IP backbone both in bandwidth to support end users’ broadband Internet usage, and in direct connection to major ISPs in Asia, the U.S., Europe and the South West Pacific.

“We’re pleased that NTT Com has deployed the T-series, which will enable it to keep pace with escalating business requirements, while controlling costs as it scales,” said Masanori Osuga, vice president of Japan, Juniper Networks.

“By leveraging the widely-deployed JUNOS network operating system and sharing components with existing T-series routers, the T1600 offered NTT Communications a unique, seamless upgrade path for its install base of T640 routers without service interruption to its customers worldwide.”

With over 4,000 platforms shipped to more than 200 customers worldwide, the T-series is the industry’s most proven, scalable, feature-rich and flexible core routing platform with the scale, performance, reliability and security required by the world’s most demanding IP networks.

The T1600 multi-terabit core router enables service providers to increase network capacity in line with escalating service demands without adding incremental systems to the network so that they can speed new service deployment, deliver a superior end-user experience and maximize their existing T-series investments.

In addition, the T1600 can deliver 1.6 Tbps capacity with 40 percent less power consumption, compared to competitive platforms. All Juniper Networks T-series routers run on JUNOS software, a single source operating system that enables consistent operations, network scale without disruption, and unprecedented interoperability and service agility.
