Now, Symbian OS is fully open source

BANGALORE, INDIA: Mobile developers have a great news. The Symbian OS, starting from today would be completely open source.

According to media reports, Symbian foundation on Wednesday announced that the code for its operating system would be available for free.

The OS which runs behind most of the Nokia phones as well others, and has shipped about 330 million devices worldwide.

The raising popularity of Google's Android, again an open source platform has given heat to the competition. But Symbian denies this move as a way to lure customers.

BBC quoted Lee Williams of the Symbian Foundation saying that the idea had been since 12-18 months  before Android and before the launch of the original iPhone.
