BANGALORE: The Indian outfit of Novellus Systems Inc, Novellus Systems India, is offering the last stage and critical support for the 100 clients of Novellus’ globally, since 1st August, 2002. It is the only center in the world of the company to offer e-mail and telephone support and is contemplating remote access support for its clients.

Novellus is the semiconductor manufacturing capital provider and its clientele include Intel, Motorola and members of the Taiwan Semiconductors Association, among others.

"Support to our clients means high end technical support, because our systems for the fabs are very sensitive and extremely critical for our clients. When a support request reaches India, it has already crossed the first stage of web support and second stage of field service engineer visit and hence gets into e-mail or telephone based support. About 85 percent of the issue is addressed by the Indian center, before the system designers get involved," said Novellus Systems India MD, Ashok Belle.

Started off as a software development arm of Novellus, the Indian subsidiary now has two other primary work objectives other than software development, software testing and global support for its clients. It has recruited a 12 member strong team for its global support center India, while the total strength of Novellus in India is 60.

The software testing is done on a 24 hour basis non-stop cycle and is in the process of automating the testing of the systems. While the software development is a split team, the company is coordinating its work with its two development centers in the US, San Jose and Oregon.

"Currently we are consolidating the three services and would probably scale up to design systems from the Indian center. The remote access support is also aggressively pursued, even though some clients will not want to part with their IP of the chips," added Belle.

Novellus recorded $ 1.3 billion in revenue for the financial year 2001, present in 16 countries and represented by 2900 employees.
