Nortel Networks said it had agreed to buy e-commerce software publisher Clarify of San Jose for $2.1 billion in stock, a 50 per cent premium over the company’s market value prior to the merger announcement Clarify’s products link information about a product with a database of customers, helping companies fulfill requests more quickly. Clarify has been selling to Microsoft, IBM, Digex, and Nortel. Nortel said it would use Clarify to add electronic business services, a fast-growing part of Internet use. "The top business priority is developing e-business strategies that create lasting customer relationships,'' said Nortel's group president in charge of corporate sales, Bill Conner.
