Nokia Siemens deploys 3G soln in Hong Kong

HONG KONG, CHINA: Nokia Siemens Networks today announced that it has been appointed by Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited as the sole vendor and service partner for its 3G network modernization and expansion project.

Nokia Siemens Networks would deploy High Speed Packet Access evolution (HSPA+) technology to leapfrog existing high speed data access technology and deliver speeds of up to 42Mbps. A five-year framework agreement has been reached between both parties which includes a minimum equipment purchase of close to HK$ 350 million (approximately EURO 31 million), said a press release.

Supported by Nokia Siemens Networks’ most compact base station technology, the Flexi BTS, and pioneering Direct Tunnel solution that provides the benefits of a flat architecture platform as well as mobile softswitching technology, HTHKH can look forward to an enhancement in operational efficiency.

“With widespread usage of data and mobile Internet activities, our solution is ideal for mega cities like Hong Kong,” said Richard Kitts, Head of Hutchison Customer Business Team at Nokia Siemens Networks.

“The Flexi BTS’ energy saving features coupled with our HSPA+ capabilities will provide HTHKH the required edge in the market both in terms of operational efficiencies and cutting edge technology. Further, with our strong commitment to services, we will ensure the project rolls out smoothly assuring HTHKH’s subscribers a high performing and reliable network guarantee,” he added.

“As the largest 3G mobile operator in Hong Kong, we took the lead in integrating mobile broadband services into the daily lives of our customers as early as 2006,” said Daniel Chung, CTO of HTHKH.

“To deliver seamless customer experiences, we have always been at the forefront of advanced technologies, providing services through a resilient high-speed broadband network and diversified solutions and applications. ”

He added that the network upgrade project run in conjunction with Nokia Siemens Networks would represent another milestone in their network and service development, significantly increasing their capacity to cater to the growing demand for mobile data.

To ensure high quality services to HTHKH customers, Nokia Siemens Networks would deploy its NetAct network management system to monitor, manage and optimize the network, and offer a comprehensive range of services including maintenance and competence development training, the release added.
