IRVING, Texas: Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, is hoping U.S. consumers will go to its website to purchase a phone and wireless service instead of going to a service provider. The Finnish company said it launched an online store on its U.S. website for its mobile phones and accessories.

Users simply provide a zip code to pull up a list of handsets supported by each carrier in the area. The site lets consumers search and buy handsets based on price, physical characteristics, network capabilities, battery life and other features. Consumers can also compare service plans based on price, minutes, service features, contract terms and customer service availability.

Nokia's store is a departure from the way most U.S. consumers shop for phones. Because U.S. wireless telephone companies have networks based on incompatible technologies, the availability of phone models depends on the service provider. Consumers typically go to a service provider such as Verizon Wireless or AT&T Wireless Services Inc. to choose and buy phones.

Nokia said the online store provides pricing based on purchase with a wireless service plan or at retail price without a service plan. Service plans are available from most major wireless carriers. The website was developed in conjunction with online wireless retailer LetsTalk.
