HELSINKI: Top handset maker Nokia will expand its mobile device production in Dongguan, China to increase capacity and flexibility to meet fast growing demand in Asia, it said in a statement on Thursday.

Nokia said it expected production at the expanded factory to begin in the third quarter of next year with a gradual ramp up leading to a total workforce of some 1,900 when production is at full scale.

Nokia has nine mobile device plants globally and it expects its Chennai plant in India to be operational in the first half of 2006.
