NEW DELHI: NIIT has reached a landmark in setting up training centers for IT
education. Coinciding with the year 2000, the company has also set up its 2000th
education center at Allahabad, which is incidentally its third in the city. The
company has come a long way since it had set up its first institute in Mumbai in
1982. Today, NIIT’s presence extends across 952 cities, including 79 cities
overseas.
NIIT plans to add another 1,000 centers within a year’s time. Most of the
new centers would be set up in smaller towns and therefore the revenue
implications will not be significant in the immediate future. The company is in
the process of signing several MoUs with various state governments to cater to
the IT needs of government schools. NIIT, which has already signed up with Tamil
Nadu, is in talks with the state governments of Punjab, Haryana and Karnataka.
Speaking on the occasion, Nasscom president Dewang Mehta said, "NIIT is
a classic example of the growth of a company that has capitalized on its brand
name. It has been successful in making inroads into the country’s interiors
only on the basis of its brand and the goodwill that goes with the name. The
need of the hour is for Indian companies to focus on growth plans based on
building brands and through IPRs."
Recognizing its contribution to the growth of the IT industry, the World Bank
recently signed an MoU with NIIT for a student loan program.
