Zscaler has expanded its AI-powered Zero Trust Exchange platform with Zscaler Cellular, a breakthrough solution that enables Zero Trust communication for IoT and OT devices using just a SIM card—no VPNs or software required. The solution provides seamless and resilient global connectivity while maintaining a zero attack surface by isolating each device and routing all traffic securely through the Zscaler platform.

First-of-Its-Kind SIM-Only Zero Trust Connectivity

“Zscaler pioneered Zero Trust architecture—starting with users, then cloud, then branch. With Zscaler Cellular, we’ve extended the Zero Trust Exchange to IoT and OT devices with a simple ‘install and go’ SIM card,” said Nathan Howe, Group VP of Emerging Technologies, Zscaler. “It allows secure connection to any cellular network worldwide, isolates each device to eliminate attack surfaces, and protects all traffic through our platform.”

As enterprises deploy connected devices across dynamic environments, traditional VPN- or firewall-based models fail to provide scale, visibility, or security. Cellular networks alone don’t enforce Zero Trust principles, leading to blind spots and increased exposure.

Real-World Impact, Telco Partnerships, and Global Reach

“Zscaler Cellular solved a long-standing challenge: how to securely operate IoT and mobile devices at client sites without software agents or VPNs,” said Brian Shelby, Director of IT Infrastructure and Cybersecurity at Maverick Transportation. “Zscaler allowed us to enforce Zero Trust policies via SIM-enabled kiosks and tablets. The employee experience improved, the attack surface disappeared, and we stayed secure—without adding software or VPNs.”

To scale this innovation, Zscaler is partnering with major telecom providers such as NTT. These collaborations integrate Zscaler Cellular and Zscaler Cellular Edge with telecom infrastructure, giving enterprises scalable, managed security services tailored for globally distributed, cellular-connected environments.

“Zscaler Cellular represents a major leap in IoT and mobile security,” said Zeus Kerravala, Founder and Principal Analyst, ZK Research. “By combining cellular with Zero Trust, Zscaler fills long-standing control and visibility gaps. It’s the first solution I’ve seen that offers cloud-scale security to every connected device with the simplicity of a SIM.”
