The appointment of a new Chief Operating Officer, Sabih Khan, at one of the most influential tech giants in the world presents a big move for Apple. The executive of Indian origin, who is the present Senior Vice President of Operations at Apple, will take over the role of senior executive later this month after Jeff Williams. The appointment of Khan is an indicator of the increased emphasis on resilient supply chains, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable technology.
A Tech Strategist with a History in Global Supply Chain Management
In the year 1995, Khan joined Apple as a member of the procurement team. The integration and extreme efficiency of the supply chain seen in the company has been the key project by him in the close to three decades. After his appointment to the position of SVP of Operations in 2019, he has overseen the most important parts of work, such as planning, production, transportation, and delivery within the Apple ecosystem.
“Sabih is a brilliant strategist who has been one of the central architects of Apple's supply chain,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “He has helped pioneer new technologies in advanced manufacturing, expanded Apple's footprint in the U.S., and pushed forward our environmental goals, cutting Apple's carbon footprint by over 60 percent. Above all, Sabih leads with heart and integrity, and I know he will make an exceptional chief operating officer.”
Promoting Sustainable Innovation
Khan has been the driving force behind Apple in becoming environmentally responsible. He has overseen supplier responsibility initiatives where he has focused more on ensuring that workers are protected in addition to being environmentally friendly, thus enabling Apple to become more inclined to become a green manufacturer. His leadership made Apple reduce its carbon footprint by over 60 percent, strengthening the company's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
A Smooth Transition from Jeff Williams
Apple COO and the three-decade veteran Jeff Williams will continue working in the company until the transition period. He will go on to be in control of Apple's design and health teams until his retirement later this year. Under him, Khan will report directly to the company CEO, Tim Cook.
From Engineering to Executive Management
Khan is an applications development engineer, technical leader, and a previous employee of GE Plastic prior to entering Apple. He has two bachelor's degrees in economics and mechanical engineering from Tufts University and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
