NEC's Brazil unit wins $260 m. order
TOKYO: Japan's biggest computer maker, NEC Corp, announced on Wednesday that its
Brazilian unit had won a $260 million order from Brazilian telephone carrier
Telesp for a CDMA-based fixed wireless access (FWA) system. The system will
allow Telesp to install up to 300,000 lines in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city,
helping it meet telephone service targets set by the government ahead of a 2003
deadline, NEC said. Telesp, a unit of Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, was one
of the first companies to install CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) FWA
systems in Brazil. It has become one of the country's largest network operators
since the government deregulated the telecommunications sector in 1998, seeking
to raise telephone subscription levels to 28.5 per cent in 2003 from a current
15 per cent - Reuters.
