AMD has capacity for 30% marketshare
By the end of this year, chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) expects to be
able to produce enough microprocessors to take a 30 percent share of the
worldwide microprocessor market. That would be stunning achievement in the face
of tough competition from Intel which had effectively nullified the competitive
threat from AMD’s microprocessor business just three years ago. AMD officials
said this week that they believe to have the capacity in place to ship enough
processors to take a 30 percent marketshare by the end of the year, up from
about 21 percent in the first quarter and 17% at the end of 2000. Whether AMD
will actually have a 30 percent share of the market will depend on how the
market for its chips develops in the next several months. AMD’s gain, should
is materialize, will result from a combination of a modest 15% increase in AMD's
own sales and the sales slump Intel is experiencing. — SVNS
