Dax launches cable modem

CHENNAI: Dax has extended its modem line with the launch of the Dax Cable Modem, which enables the Internet to be accessed through cable. The modem uses the cable TV Network, which is attached to two leads--one to a splitter and the other to the Dax cable modem. The other lead is connected to the TV. The cable modem is then connected to the PC through an Ethernet interface. This enables the home user to access both the TV and Internet, simultaneously.

According to company sources, the cable modem, which is priced at Rs 15,000, will enable users to surf the Internet at speeds, which are 25-30 times faster than a telephone line modem. The download speed, however, is 700 times faster. The additional cost to the customer would be a nominal increase in the monthly cable TV subscription. The subscriber can also avoid the cost of phone usage (as is the case of phone line modems).

Deepak Mizra, Director, Apcom Computers, said, "The Internet revolution is sweeping the country with a burgeoning number of Internet users. This, coupled with the traffic congestion on the Net due to limited bandwidth, has made Internet access more expensive and slower. The modem makes Internet access faster and cheaper for home users, which also happens to be MNCS DOCSIS (worldwide cable modem standard) compliant." The estimated market for cable modems during the next year is 80,000 units.
