BANGALORE, INDIA: YouTube on Tuesday released its own standalone iPhone app. The release, which comes close launch of iOS6 minus the YouTube app, features a major improvement with better discovery and sharing options.

The new YouTube app is similar to its Android version but retains a distinctly iOS flavor, reports WIRED.

According to the report, the YouTube iOS6 app ditches that antiquated and out-of-place TV app icon for YouTube’s traditional black, white, and red logo. And the redesigned interface is pleasantly reminiscent of the Google+ iOS app. Video stills, which you can flick upwards to browse through, are rectangular and take up the full width of the iPhone’s screen, with titles and descriptions underneath each still.

A navigation menu hidden underneath the left side of the screen can be accessed at any time with a swipe to the right.

YouTube is placing more emphasis on discovery and personalization through channel subscriptions. The app opens up directly to a “Home Feed” of your subscriptions.

The YouTube app is free and available from the App Store today. According to the WIRED, an iPad-specific version will be available in the coming months.
