NEW YORK: New York Times Co. said on Wednesday it was investigating a
security breach of its internal corporate Web site, but said that security flaw
had been fixed.
The company was notified on Tuesday about the breach of its Intranet, which
includes company presentations by management, internal memos, and other company
information, spokeswoman Christine Mohan told Reuters.
"We identified the security flaw and addressed it, and are continuing to
investigate the situation to ensure the security of our network," she said.
SecurityFocus, which provides Web security services and operates a Web-based
tip sheet, identified the hacker as Adrian Lamo, and said he was able to gain
access to a database containing the names, social security numbers, and phone
numbers of 3,000 contributors to the newspaper's op-ed pages, including actor
Robert Redford and former Secretary of State James Baker.
The Web site also credited Lamo with exposing security holes at telephone and
data services company WorldCom Inc. The New York Times said it is still
investigating the matter, Mohan said.
