BANGALORE, INDIA: Kawasaki-headquartered semiconductor manufacturer NEC Electronics, in association with Wipro Technologies, today announced the setting up of its liaison office in Bangalore.

Wipro will provide semiconductor design services to NEC. The development center will provide front-end and back-end design services to NEC Electronics for Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and microcontrollers in digital consumer and automotive areas.

NEC will provide technical assistance and advanced design support for multinational corporations with hardware and software development bases in India. Its field application engineers will offer assistance with implementing semiconductors in areas such as consumer electronics, automotive and industrial systems.

NEC will also look at business opportunities with local companies, and provide its general purpose and automotive microcontrollers power management devices and system-on-chip solutions for digital consumer applications.

“Bangalore has become one of the world’s major hubs for technology and development and India is the fastest growing semiconductor market in Asia. We are very excited to work with Wipro, a leader in semiconductor design support services,” said Toshio Nakajima, chief executive officer, NEC.

“Though we were serving Indian customers from Singapore, it had limitations. We won’t be doing any direct sales as it will be done through distributors. In India we see great potential in the segment of set top boxes,” said Krishnan Neelakantan, head of the liaison office.

Sudip Nandy, president, telecom and product engineering solutions at Wipro said: “NEC has an exceptional understanding of the needs of the market and Wipro will leverage its vast VLSI (Very-large-scale integration) experience, coupled with our in-house design methodology.

The center has been set up at Wipro’s Electronics City campus.
