Nation honours eminent personalities

NEW DELHI: Nasscom president Kiran Karnik, IIM – A director Bakul Dholakia and the managing director of Trident Group, Rajinder Gupta, were among the Padma Shri awardees this year.

The government of India has also conferred Padma Bhushan on Sunil Bharti Mittal, the CMD of Bharti Group.

The Indian president, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam presented the awards on Republic Day.

A total of 121 Padma awards were announced this year, which included 10 Padma Vibhushan, 32 Padma Bhushan and 79 Padma Shri awards. No one was named for the country’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.

Nasscom’s Karnik was the Dataquest IT Person of the Year 2005 and earlier in 1998, had received the Frank Malina medal for Space Education by the International Astronautical Federation.
