This was announced at a press conference on an update of Nasscom’s initiatives in 2006 on the sidelines of Infocom 2006, being held in Kolkata.

Announcing Nasscom’s plans for West Bengal, B Ramalinga Raju, founder and chairman of Satyam Computer Services and chairman, Nasscom, said, “The Indian IT and software industry is continuously renewing itself and seeking to grow. Among the emerging destinations, we see West Bengal making a prominent mark. To ensure we are able to give enough attention to the region, we will be setting up a regional office in Kolkata sometime during 2007.”

“Nasscom has been present in West Bengal through several industry events and has about 35 members in the region, in addition to a strong presence of leading multinational and domestic IT players. We feel the time is apt to strengthen our focus in the region”, he added.

Kiran Karnik, president, Nasscom, said, “West Bengal is well positioned with regard to the critical needs of the IT industry — an abundant and high-quality talent pool to draw upon, good telecom and physical infrastructure, a favourable policy framework, and competitive operational costs. The Government’s recent focus on revitalizing economic activity in the State has sent a positive signal to the industry.”

“While the experience of the last few years have been positive and there is need to ensure that there is no return to disruptive and negative practices. A few other issues that require attention are a single-window system, less bureaucracy, quick clearances and approvals, minimal political interference to the industry’s functioning, and “Brand Building”: the image of Kolkata and West Bengal needs continuing refurbishing. Much progress has been made on this in the last few years, raising the potential of the State to only become a major IT hub,” he added.
