"I am grateful to you for inviting me to Chair the State Vision Group. It will be both a privilege and pleasure to do so," said Murthy said in a letter dated August 26 to shief minister HD Kumaraswamy.

The terms and conditions, and the tenure of Murthy’s new assignment were not immediately known. However, according to an official announcement, Murthy’s mandate will be to provide guidance to the IT sector in the state.

The first challenge before Murthy would be to showcase the state's eco-system with respect to promotion and growth of the IT industry at the upcoming BangaloreIT.In 2006 event in late October.

The chief minister had publicly requested Murthy to chair the IT Vision Group at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Nasdaq-listed Infosys in Mysore in July.

Kumaraswamy had said as the chief, Murthy would guide the Vision Group for the development of knowledge-based industries like IT, BT and precision engineering. The chief minister acknowledged Murthy's 'singular' contribution to the growth and development of India's technology sector.

However, Murthy did not immediately respond to the request, possibly in the backdrop of allegation made by the chief minister's father and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda that Infosys and other companies had grabbed land during the tenure of chief minister Dharam Singh.

Gowda had alleged that Infosys and other IT companies were grabbing government-owned land and carrying out real-estate business. Disturbed by the allegations, Murthy had quit as chairman of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) on October 20, 2005.
