LOS ANGELES, USA: MySpace announced two milestones in its continued effort to lead the future of a more social Web: support for the OpenID movement, a free framework that simplifies a user’s online experience by decentralizing their digital identity; and two implementations of MySpace’s own Data Availability initiative with Flixster and Eventful.

“MySpace is committed to working with the open source community to allow users to widely control their digital identity,” said Jim Benedetto, senior vice president of technology for MySpace. “Joining OpenID marks the next step in MySpace’s goal to allow our users to take their personal URL with them across the Web.”

OpenID takes advantage of already existing Internet technology (URI, HTTP, SSL, Diffie-Hellman) and allows users of social web sites to easily transform an existing URL into an account which can be used at sites which support OpenID logins. By joining OpenID, MySpace is giving users control of their login and their digital identity, allowing them to use their MySpace URL as their identity at all the websites which support OpenID.

In addition to its support of the OpenID movement, MySpace announced today two new implementations, of its Data Availability initiative with Flixster and Eventful. In addition, MySpace has created enhancements to the Data Availability initiative which allow for caching and storage of users content and data.
