BANGALORE, INDIA: The Myanmar government appeared to have blocked public Internet access, raising fears of a military crackdown on civilians, news agencies reported from Yangon, quoting witnesses and diplomats.

The Internet was the major source for information and images of the pro-democracy protests and the military action on protesters, which left at least 10 persons, including Buddhist monks and a Japanese cameraman, dead in the past two days.

The troops have broken into major Buddhist monasteries and have been occupying them, reports said.

The latest developments in that country has triggered concerns of a repeat of the 1988 uprising in which an estimated 3000 persons were killed.
