The app has been designed to work with all mobile phones and tablets, including basic feature phones, and will be available for free download on Android, Windows, Blackberry and iOS stores. It also works with Java and Nokia phones.

Sam Rufus Nallaraj, CEO of Mxit India, said: "We're excited at the prospect of enhancing the lives of Indians by providing functionality otherwise not available to low end handset users, as well as replacing the reliance on SMS on feature phones with a cheaper, more engaging chat alternative."

The app is currently available in English and Hindi but the company is working to bring it in ten Indian languages in six months.

The 10 languages that they are working on are Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Assamese and Oriya.
