MTNL-Teracom to intro new tablet devices

NEW DELHI, INDIA: As the ultra low-cost tablet market get intense with the foray of government-backed Aakash, followed by close to a dozen of such rollouts, the state-owned MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) has perhaps hit the market hilt.

With government's intent to empower 220 million school children, the vendors (not excluding BSNL-Pantel combine) are vying for immense opportunity. Of late, MTNL together with Teracom has joined the ultra low-cost tablet bandwagon.

Even as the MTNL Lofty tablets hit the shelves of the Sanchar Haats and retail channel stores, the manufacturer Teracom will introduce two new variants in next few months. All the three devices priced between Rs 3,999 to Rs 10,999 will also be available on all major e-commerce Websites.

Speaking to CIOL, Teracom CMD Mukesh Arora said that they are highly encouraged with overwhelming customer response to their products and have setup an internal target to manufacture and supply at least one million tablets in the coming year. The company, he said will unveil two more devices and new applications by December 2012.

On comparing specifications with Aakash II and other competitors, Arora said that that TZ300 has several superior features that include latest Android version (Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich). "It has a powerful Cortex A8 1.2 GHz processor, 4GB internal storage and full glass touch screen design," he added.

Lofty Tab gets MTNL boost as it has introduced special data plan for 10GB for 60 days at Rs.750 for every purchase. For Teracom WiFi tablets, MTNL is offering a free data cards (worth Rs 1200) on a purchase of 15GB plan.

The company said that all three tablets (TZ 100, TZ200 and TZ300) can be ordered through their official Website and within a month's time-frame, the products will be available over all the major e-commerce Websites.
