BANGALORE: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) will come out with a revised Internet tariff structure and embark upon setting up Net kiosks in Delhi and Mumbai before the year-end, the MTNL chairman and managing director S. Rajagopalan has said.

"We will announce our new Internet tariffs on December 3 and it will have different packages (such as cheaper night rates). Another plan is to set up 25 Internet kiosks each in Delhi and Mumbai,'' said Mr Rajagopalan. MTNL has tied up with ITI for sourcing equipment for the kiosks. He also said, in the next few days the existing STD-ISD operators would be eligible for setting up these kiosks. The reduction in Internet tariff and setting up cyber kiosks are part of MTNL's efforts to emerge as a company, which leverages on the convergence of technologies in the new millennium.

On MTNL's plans to get listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), he said the company would go for the listing by January 2000, even if the proposed GDR issue, which the Government deferred earlier, would not be out by that time. He also added that ideally, MTNL would like to issue an ADR along with GDR, though it is up to the Government to take such a decision.

Mr Rajagopalan also said a new business plan for the next millennium would be submitted before the MTNL board on December 3. "MTNL would not shy away from any business proposition, just like any private company. The new business plan would envisage MTNL investing in other companies, going in for strategic tie-ups and associating itself with good business plans,'' he added. MTNL's CDMA mobile phone service has been a success and encouraged by the response, the company would increase the number of subscribers to 50,000 each in Delhi and Mumbai, and the area under CDMA coverage would also be increased.
