NEW DELHI: In the run-up for a possible India launch of X-Box, software major Microsoft Corporation is working with four Indian companies to enhance the graphics capabilities of its video games system X-Box.

"India is one of the most advanced places, when it comes to software development. So leveraging on this advantage, we are working with some companies to develop games for our X-Box," informed Microsoft home and entertainment division Asia and Greater China regional sales director, Yolanda Chan.

Microsoft has also devised a three-pronged strategy to churn revenue out of this product line. "We generate revenue from selling consoles, games and the peripherals along with the X-Box. There are certain issues to be addressed in India like a good broadband penetration, before we actually launch this. We are talking to ISPs, developers and gaming enthusiasts and exploring the market for launching X-Box in India," she added.

Though the company has not put a date for the India launch, opening up of the telecom sector and a proper broadband penetration will mean that the atmosphere is right for such products in India. "We are weighing the possibility of launching X-Box in India. We are studying the market carefully and the launch could be sometime in near future," she added.

X-Box, which was launched worldwide in the year 2000 has shipped more than 15.5 million consoles worldwide. "We are targeting to take this number to the 20 million mark by the end of 2005. The overall Asian region has got immense potential for a product like this and we hope to do well in these regions," Chan opined.

First available only as a console, the product also has an Internet version X-Box live connecting gamers on an online platform.
