BANGALORE: MphasiS BFL Ltd, a mid-sized Indian software service exporter with a fast-growing call centre subsidiary, plans to start its first overseas call centre in Mexico in January, a senior company official said on Friday.

"One of our large banking clients had this requirement from the United States and we will initially be serving this client only," Ravi Ramu, chief financial officer at MphasiS, told Reuters. The Spanish-language call centre is being set up at an initial cost of about $1.0 million and will start off with about 50 to 60 employees, he said. The centre will have a capacity to house about 500 staff.

Large global corporations are increasingly tapping India's army of cost-effective software developers and English-speaking graduates to provide remote back-office services such as call centres, accounting and payroll management to cut costs.

MsourcE, the three-year-old back-office unit of MphasiS, is among India's largest in the industry and employs about 2,000 people. "We are continuing with our aggressive hiring plans and are adding about 150 to 200 people every month," Ramu said.

Indian software giants such as Infosys Technologies Ltd and Wipro are also leveraging their existing sales team and global clients to offer back-office services. Revenue of MsourcE, which serves about 14 clients mainly in the financial services sector, soared more than four times to about 223 million rupees ($4.6 million) in the July-September quarter from the year-ago period.
