NEW DELHI: In its bid to kick-start the Smartphone initiative, handset maker Motorola has launched its MPx200 handset in the Indian region. The first in a series of smart phones with windows mobile operating software, the handset is billed to combine the power of a PC with that of a mobile.

Targeting the high-end market segment in India, the company is making this handset available only at select Hutch retail outlets. "We are partnering with Hutch to make this set available at their 70 retail outlets in the country," informed Motorola personal communication sector GM, (South-West Asia), Percy P Batliwala.

The handset offers instant access to mails, using Outlook interface. It also has feature like chat on MSN messenger, viewing of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and browse through the web with Internet explorer.

Not divulging much about Motorola’s market share, Batliwala said "the company is gaining ground steadily in the Indian market". "This launch of MPx200 and other Smartphone models in coming months should see our market-share increasing considerably," he added.

Having a talk-time of more than five hours, the handset is priced at Rs 25,995. The phone has the capability to connect through any GPRS network available in the country and provide Internet access.

As part of its strategy to partner with telecom operators, the handset is already available in the European, US and UK markets in association with different mobile operators like Orange, AT&T, T Mobile and Smart. "We are looking for similar partnerships in India as well. Though we have just one (Hutch) in place now, we would be exploring different ones as we move forward," he added.
