HYDERABAD: Motorola Computer Group (MCG), a business unit of the Motorola Integrated Electronic Systems Sector (IESS), has set up its R&D center in Hyderabad. The center, which has a strength of 40-people, acquired the business of Hyderabad-based Netplane Systems in February early this year along with its people and is housed in a 15,000 sq ft facility in Vannenburg IT Park, Hitech City. MCG VP and GM Wendy Vittori, who was in Hyderabad to inaugurate the center, said, “In the telecom space overbuilding of equipment has happened in the last five years and this equipment does not have the capability or the scalability to support the new services the carriers want to supply.”

This is the big opportunity MCG is looking to encash. Application platform that will have hardware, system software and communication software already integrated will be developed at the center. The cutting edge work on pre-integrated platforms is already on at MCG and by the end of this year the product will be through.

“The demonstration of the integrated platform in May 2003 to OEMs drew a very positive response,” said Wendy.

MCG is looking at doubling the strength of its Hyderabad R&D center in about two years time depending on the recovery of the industry. Out of Motorola’s five development center two are located in Asia.
