Now onwards, Motorola Mobility will sell mobile phones and television set-top boxes, while Motorola Solutions will sell wireless gadgets such as walkie-talkies to government organizations and businesses.

In a joint statement announced in November, Greg Brown, Motorola co-CEO and CEO of Motorola Solutions, and Sanjay Jha, Motorola co-CEO and CEO of Motorola Mobility, said that the “Separation is expected to benefit Motorola, its stockholders, as well as each company's respective customers and employees”.

“We look forward to taking advantage of the opportunities before us as we begin the new year as two independent, publicly traded companies,” they said.

Motorola is splitting after years of losses at its mobile phone business, which, until recently, had a tough time coming up with products that were competitive with rivals such as Apple Inc and Research In Motion Ltd.
