Motorola Mobility to prune India operations, cut workforce

BANGALORE, INDIA: A majority of Motorola Mobility employees based in India may loose their jobs as the US based company plans to go ahead with its global restructuring strategy.

The company has already announced it plan to prune its its nearly 20,000 workforce by 20 percent worldwide. The exact number of employees who are set to loose jobs in India is yet to be confirmed.

As per new media reports, quoting company sources, Motorola Mobility employees working for projects relevant to products being sold in the US market would be retained.

The US based company which has about 30 sales offices and R&D units worldwide has also indicated at a 'generous' severance packages and outplacement services to employees that will be impacted.

According to a Economic Times reports that Motorola is scaling down on a large scale in India as it was reducing the number of models in the market and limiting its presence to just smartphones, these people said without wanting to be identified. The company would continue to sell its phones till stocks are exhausted while service centers would continue to function.

The ET report quotes Motorola Mobility's director for communications in Asia Pacific William Moss confirming that the global restructuring was impacting India and its workforce, who will be given other employment opportunities apart from compensation.
