MontaVista releases Linux 6

SANTA CLARA, USA: MontaVista Software, Inc., a provider in embedded Linux commercialization, today announced MontaVista Linux 6, new approach to embedded Linux development.

By delivering Market Specific Distributions designed specifically for Freescale processors, MontaVista gives product developers unparalleled flexibility to design and deliver products uniquely tailored for their target market, said a press release.

MSD for Freescale processors are new Linux distributions, built on a common framework, and optimized for their target markets, including automotive, consumer, industrial, and networking.

It supports the full breadth of functionality offered by Freescale, and provides the value-add features and quality that developers expect from MontaVista.

Fully supported by MontaVista, MSDs for Freescale offerings may be customized and optimized for a specific target application, allowing developers to easily create a tailored software distribution that fully capitalizes on the underlying hardware platform, added the release.

Ravi Swaminathan, director, Software Ecosystem Alliances at Freescale Semiconductor said, “The release of MontaVista Linux 6 allows our customers to continue to develop innovative, next-generation products on both Power Architecture and i.MX processors.”

“By providing Market Specific Distributions designed specifically for Freescale processors and their target applications, innovative tools like the MontaVista Integration Platform, and support for the broader open-source community, our joint customers can continue to create innovative, differentiated products,” he added.

MSDs would be made available for Freescale PowerQUICC II Pro processors, PowerQUICC III processors, QorIQ communications platforms, and i.MX processors.

“With the introduction of Market Specific Distributions for the Freescale processors, our joint customers can deliver products to market faster than ever, fully leveraging the power of the hardware and the support of MontaVista. Development of these new MSDs for Freescale continues our long, ongoing partnership, ” said Joerg Bertholdt, vice president of Marketing at MontaVista.

To help device developers get the most out of open source, MontaVista Linux 6 is comprised of Market Specific Distributions and MontaVista Integration Platform, Zone Content Server, DevRocket6.

MontaVista Linux 6 is in use by beta customers today, and will be generally available in July 2009.
