NEW YORK: Amongst an unprecedented gathering of NRIs on his US visit, PM Narendra Modi attempted well to galvanise more than some patriotic fervour. What of course caught our attention during his much-awaited speech, is how Modi heavily accentuated the role of technology in his current endeavours and future plans for India's transformation.

He talked about mobile applications like 'Make my India' urging people to participate actively in joining his vision of etching a new pride of self-reliance for the country. He also mentioned websites like www.mygov.in so that people can pour in suggestions and keep tab on the development plans in small and big ways.

The third part he stressed was easy and effective governance,  through mechanisms like single-window or online processes, which is intended to do away with cumbersome, bureaucractic legacy that is often faced by and deters investment, industry and foreigners.

Turns out that it was more than rhetoric when he started his address by taking a potshot on those that perceive India to be a land of snake-charmers. He had quipped, "We have got devalued . Now we play with the mouse instead." It would be interesting and heartening to watch how he and his vision navigates the future with technology as a key ignition part.
