BANGALORE: US based Chipmaker Texas Instruments (TI, is working on a prototype to launch a single chip solution for cellular phones. The company hopes that this technology would result in producing low cost handsets, enriching smart phones with more features and achieving better market penetration. TI CEO, Rich Templeton made this announcement while addressing the employees and media at the inauguration of the company's new campus in Bangalore.

Reiterating the company's long-term commitment to India, Templeton added that India is important for the company both as a development center as well as a growing semi-conductor market.

Elaborating the India operations, TI India MD, Dr Biswadip (Bobby) Mitra said, "Our engineers are working on 90 Nm (Nanometer) products and libraries and also doing component level work on 65 Nm."

The new campus located at the Bagmane Tech Park in C V Raman Nagar in Bangalore is spread across a seven-acre area and houses around 1,100 employees. The company has tie-ups with around 40, third-party companies and developers in India.

Templeton said that globally, the company was pumping an investment of $2.1 billion this year into advanced semi conductor products, process manufacturing and technology. Speaking on market trends, he said that communications and entertainment systems were moving on to semi-conductor chips. "The high growth markets are wireless and broadband, which are moving into homes and later onto a single chip," he informed.

TI had earlier showcased the single chip mobile solution at the 3GSM World Congress at Cannes this February. The company claims that this innovation would incorporate features like digital radio frequency and better power management, which would also bring down costs.
