BANGALORE, INDIA: Unperturbed by Airtel's 4G venture, other mobile operators in India are hoping to expand their 3G user base. Their confidence stems from the recent 70 per cent cut in 3G tariff. They are expecting data revenue to contribute 20-40 percent to their total revenue.

Idea Cellular with its 2.9 million 3G subscribers seems to be close to overtaking Reliance Communications, which claims 2.8 million active 3G users, highest in India.

In November 2011, Idea Cellular launched a range of Android-powered smartphones to boost growth of 3G services and it expects to sell 100,000 units of its new dual-SIM smartphones in three months, according to Dowjones.com.

It is evident that the affordable 3G plans is a strategy by mobile operators to woo customers to 3G services, which are said to be a failure in India with 2G still being the fundamental choice of many.
