New Update

Its not one thing, Its many! Nokia N95's advertisement campaign certainly signifies what the modern cellphone has become. Your phone is not just a phone. It's an internet device, e-mail inbox, music player, video player, radio, digital camera, video camera, organizer, personal assistant and may be even a GPS locator. Given all this, it's no wonder that the once modest mobile phone has now become an essential digital tool.

Talking about the next wave, your new phone might just help you to land that elusive job you've been eyeing. This could be as simple as using SMS if you have a basic handset. Websites like Naukri.com, Clickjobs.com and Jobkhozo.com provide the optional service of sending SMS to your phone when a prospective employer wants to contact you. You can get job details and even interview offers right on your cellphone.

If you have a GPRS/ Wi-Fi enabled cellphone, it's easy to access the internet and keep a track of updates on the website. E-mails regarding job opportunities and interviews can be sent and received on the move (Read our story on mobile e-mail on Page 94). A lot of new smartphones and PDAs have inherent support for Microsoft Office documents. If you have a Series 60 or 80 smartphone, Windows Mobile device, Symbian UIQ phone, Palm or Linux device, you can send and receive Word documents easily. Some of them even allow editing of documents so that you can update your details and send to a prospective employer without wasting any time.                                                                          mobilejobs01_june2k7.jpg (7308 bytes)

With several 3G-enabled phones already in the market, we're only waiting for the service providers to catch up. Once a single provider introduces 3G, the rest will follow suit. With 3G, real-time video conferencing will become a reality and you will even be able to give a job interview using your phone. Who knows, may be in the future you will also be able to use your mobile phone as a portfolio.

Simply swipe your phone or visit an office building and the company gets your résumé and credentials in a flash. There is no harm in dreaming, isn't it?
