With Bharti Airtel being the leading operator in the country, TRAI has already issued a showcause notice to it, asking it to reply and furnish details about the same.

In a communique to the Department of Telecom, TRAI said that it would take action against operators who flout its guidelines. It has already issued a directive in May clarifying that only post-paid subscribers with bundled handsets had contractual obligations.

A recent investigation by the regulatory authority revealed that the operators were rejecting portability requests on frivolous grounds.

"It was found that Bharti Airtel has violated the provisions of the MNP regulations. We are in the process of taking necessary legal action against the service provider," TRAI told DoT in a letter.

It also observed that despite the regulatory framework, porting rate in India was much below that other nations. It's to be noted that Bharti Airtel enjoys the highest market share the country.
