NEW YORK, USA: MIPS Technologies says it is still keen on IP processor cores in 3.5G and 4G cell phones, notwithstanding heavy odds, especially the fact that not a single MIPS core has so far appeared in a mobile handset available in the market.

At the Mobile World Congress, to be held in Barcelona, Spain, on February 15-18, 2010, MIPS Technologies intends to challenge the prevailing “pre-conception” in the industry that ARM is for mobile handsets and that MIPS Technologies is confined to digital consumer devices.

In a press release, Art Swift, vice-president (marketing) of MIPS Technologies, said that the company expects to demonstrate to the industry – including operators, mobile handset manufacturers, and chip suppliers – what MIPS Technologies can do.

MIPS Technologies, the second biggest IP processor company in the world, said it has “deeply penetrated” the 3.5G and 4G mobile infrastructure.

Art Swift added that MIPS Technologies hopes to extend its processor IPs to baseband as well as multimedia co-processor chips inside mobile handsets.

Swift, who explained that 4G protocols are more similar to WiFi than 3G, stressed that it is the “opportune moment” for MIPS Technologies “to change the game.”

The company says it has a big role to play in the area of 3.5G and 4G handsets, especially since key software stacks and IPs necessary for 3.5G and 4G phones are now becoming widely available for those in MIPS Technologies’ eco-system.
