"Ministry of Road Transport and Highways planned National Transport Project for computerization and interlinking of all the RTOs/ DTOs (Regional and District Transport Offices) across the country. Couple of years backs the portals VAHAN and SARTHI were launched to provide IT based solutions for Vehicle Registration and Licensing," explained Dr. Joshi.

VAHAN is designed to automate Vehicle registration, permits, taxes, Fitness Certificates. Whereas, SARTHI deals with issuance of Driving License, learning License, conductor License to citizens and License for Driving School Establishments.

"The idea behind these two portals is to ensure the registration of vehicles and data of driving license holders on one integrated national platform. Having the data online will not only eliminate duplication of Driving Licenses but will also ensure to record data of driving offences or challans at one place. This will benefit both citizens and the system," as per the government release.
