Microsoft's Somasegar gets doctorate

CHENNAI: Anna University today has conferred Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) to S Somasegar, corporate vice president, Developer Division at Microsoft Corporation, for his outstanding achievements in the field of Computer Science and in appreciation of technical innovation and excellence.

He is the youngest awardee in the history of the university to have been given this honor. The Chancellor of Anna University, Governor of Tamil Nadu, Surjit Singh Barnala, conferred the doctorate to him.

On receiving the honorary doctorate, Somasegar said, “I am grateful to Anna University for honoring me with a Degree of Doctor of Science.” He further added,” I am happy to have been chosen by my Alma Mater for this honour. The award reminds me of my student life and how much I owe this University for what I have been able to achieve in life today.”

“It is my proud privilege to present Sivaramakichenane Somasegar, a distinguished technologist and an accomplished innovator in the field of Computer Science, with a Degree of Doctor of Science from Anna University. I am sure that he will continue to make this institution proud in the future as well,” Barnala said.

Somasegar began his career at Microsoft in 1989, as a software design engineer. Currently, he heads the Developer Division, which is one of the most strategic divisions at Microsoft. Under Somasegar’s leadership, the Visual Studio tools and the .NET platform technologies are used by a majority of the software developers around the world. He is also the owner of a few patents that have been registered with the US Patents and Trademarks Office. He was the driving force behind the setting up of the Research & Development facility for Microsoft in Hyderabad, India in 1998 – Microsoft India Development Center (MSIDC).
