HYDERABAD: Notwithstanding immense contribution to projects under various product groups, Microsoft India Development Center (MIDC) is surging ahead with increased focus on upcoming projects. This fact is underscored with MIDC targeting to file 70 patents this year to that of the 40 patents filed in 2004-05.

Addressing media, MIDC MD Srini Koppolu said, "IDC is one of the few centers outside of the US to have fully-owned facilities. This only implies our commitment to deepen our relationship with India. It's a collective and collaborative effort and we intend to contribute significantly to the overall product development. Last year we had filed 40 patents and this year we are aiming at filing 70."

It may be recalled that MIDC was started in 1999 with 20 employees on the rolls and has been growing ever since. Presently, the facility that has a seating capacity of 1,500 now houses 500 employees. "We have scaled up from being an end-to-end product development to handling multiple operations and providing serviceability to enterprise customers," explained Koppolu, who himself holds around 10 patents.

So far MIDC has been undertaking product development in Windows, Windows XP SP2, Longhorn, etc. "IDC has varied range of product development groups including the Windows group, developer tools group that focuses on visual studio team development, enterprise storage, mobile devices group, RFID etc.," informed Koppolu.

Answering a question, whether IDC will look at gaming development division, where it presently doesn't focus on, he said, "Gaming requires superior quality infrastructure, domestic market and highly skilled talent. May be it will take some time for us to have a division in this area."
