Microsoft, Samung unveil smart phone tie-up

SEOUL: US software giant Microsoft Corporation on Wednesday announced a deal with South Korea's Samsung Electronics to design, develop and market a new generation of mobile phones.


Microsoft said in a statement Samsung would be the first handset manufacturer to design a range of phones for both GSM and CDMA networks using Microsoft Mobile Explorer wireless communication platform for feature phones and the Microsoft smart phone platform.


The deal was announced at a meeting between Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Samsung Electronics executive vice president K.T. Lee. Samsung shares were up 8,000 won at 361,000 at 0512 GMT.
